Residency & Relocation

How should I hand over pet-care instructions on arrival day?

Agree who looks after each animal while the household is occupied and share practical care instructions privately.

Give one person clear responsibility

Choose who will supervise each animal while keys, luggage and deliveries occupy the rest of the household. Agree a quiet, secure space away from open doors, unfamiliar visitors and moving equipment. Check gates, balconies and window access before allowing the animal to explore.

Provide a short private care note covering usual feeding, water, exercise, familiar cues and behaviour around other animals. Include the vet’s contact details, transport equipment location and any prescribed treatment instructions exactly as provided by the veterinary professional. Do not ask an unfamiliar helper to improvise medication decisions.

Confirm the handover out loud

Walk through the plan with the person taking over and ask them to repeat any critical instructions. Establish who can authorise veterinary attention and how you can be reached if the phone signal fails.

Keep the animal’s travel and health records accessible but protected from casual viewing. If the animal seems unwell after travel, seek veterinary advice rather than assuming it is merely unsettled. Review the arrangement once unpacking is finished so responsibility does not disappear between household members.

Practical considerations

  • Name the responsible carer.
  • Secure a quiet arrival space.
  • Share vet-approved treatment instructions.
  • Agree an emergency contact route.
