How can I prepare Greek phrases for everyday service appointments?

Prepare a short task-based phrase sheet with names, dates and address, plus a few requests for slower speech and written instructions. Use an interpreter for consequential discussions.

Build a task-specific sheet

For an internet visit, booking or service appointment, write the appointment purpose, reference, address and the facts you need to confirm. Practise these clarification phrases:

  • «Δεν μιλάω καλά ελληνικά.» — I do not speak Greek well.
  • «Μπορείτε να μιλήσετε πιο αργά;» — Could you speak more slowly?
  • «Μπορείτε να το γράψετε;» — Could you write it down?
  • «Ποια έγγραφα χρειάζονται;» — Which documents are needed?
  • «Χρειάζεται ραντεβού;» — Is an appointment needed?

Keep a space to note the answer and show the written address rather than relying on pronunciation alone. Ask a competent speaker to check any task-specific additions, especially names and dates.

Plan for misunderstanding

Ask the organisation about language support in advance. A translation tool can help with routine vocabulary, but do not upload identity documents or confidential records into public translation requests. Use suitable interpretation for clinical consent, legal commitments or complex status questions. At the end, confirm the next action, responsible person and date in writing; a nod is not confirmation that you understood.

Practical considerations

  • Practise clarification, not just the opening request.
  • Carry written addresses and reference numbers.
  • Keep confidential details out of public translation requests.
  • Arrange interpretation where misunderstanding has serious consequences.
