How should I arrange appliance and utility handover?

Record installed equipment, included items and responsibility for each service, then confirm any account steps with providers.

Make the handover property-specific

Prepare a room-by-room record of appliances, controls, keys, meters and included equipment. Ask for operating manuals, service contacts and an explanation of unfamiliar heating, hot-water or security systems. Photograph visible condition and meter displays with the other party’s agreement so that both sides have a shared reference.

Establish which services are active, whose account each uses and who is responsible for the next administrative step. Ask providers directly about opening, transferring or closing an account; the process for one service may not apply to another.

Check function without taking risks

Agree how faults discovered at handover should be reported and which person coordinates repairs. Do not dismantle electrical or gas equipment to test it; ask an appropriately qualified technician about safety concerns.

Keep the inventory, readings and written confirmations together. If responsibility is unclear, refer to the relevant contract and obtain legal advice where necessary rather than assuming a utility account proves ownership or resolves a dispute. Make sure everyone staying in the property knows essential controls and the route for reporting an urgent fault.

Practical considerations

  • Record equipment and meter readings.
  • Confirm each service account separately.
  • Request manuals and repair contacts.
  • Use qualified technicians for safety issues.
