What should I clarify before authorising someone to act for me?
Ask an independent lawyer to explain the proposed tasks, limits and safeguards before you sign an authority document.
Set boundaries for representation
Describe the tasks you want someone to perform and the decisions you want to reserve for yourself. Collect identification details for the proposed representative and explain whether they will deal with the notary, tax administration, registries, banks or other parties.
Ask your independent Greek lawyer whether a power of attorney or another form of authorisation is appropriate. Have them explain the proposed wording, its scope, any ability to delegate, and whether it permits signing a deed, handling funds or agreeing contractual changes. These are different responsibilities and should not be assumed to travel together.
If the document will be signed outside Greece, ask the receiving professional to confirm acceptable execution, authentication and translation arrangements before booking appointments. Discuss how instructions, copies of actions taken and any later withdrawal will be communicated. Keep a signed copy and a record of where it has been used; an informal instruction to stop may not settle every consequence.
Practical considerations
- List permitted tasks and reserved decisions.
- Ask specifically about funds and delegation.
- Confirm overseas execution requirements first.
