How can I ask for clarification of an ambiguous translated clause?

Show your lawyer and translator the specific passage and explain which meaning you cannot confidently understand.

Ask about meaning, not just vocabulary

Quote the clause and identify its page, paragraph and document version. Place the Greek passage beside the translation, then describe the competing meanings in ordinary language. Explain the practical concern, such as responsibility for a payment, the condition for completion or the extent of an authority.

Ask the translator to explain linguistic choices and your Greek lawyer to explain the legal effect in context. A translator's assurance that a sentence is accurate does not settle whether the proposed obligation is acceptable. Equally, an informal explanation from another participant should not silently replace the written wording.

Request a written clarification or revised translation linked to the same source version. If the underlying clause also needs amendment, ask the lawyer to coordinate that with the notary or drafting professional. Establish which language version is intended to govern and what happens if versions differ, rather than assuming either language automatically prevails. Preserve the earlier text and the clarification together.

Practical considerations

  • Identify the exact source version.
  • Separate translation questions from legal advice.
  • Ask which wording is intended to govern.
