What should I ask a lawyer about an unfamiliar document verification mark?
Provide the complete document and ask your lawyer how its apparent verification features can be checked independently.
Verify the feature through its issuer
Provide your lawyer with the complete document, including reverse pages and attachments, rather than a cropped image of the mark. Identify where it came from, how it arrived and why you are being asked to rely on it. Preserve the original electronic file if available.
Ask what the feature appears to represent: for example, a seal, certification statement, digital signature or verification code. These features may relate to different things, such as the issuing source, a signature or the integrity of an electronic file. They do not necessarily verify the truth of every statement or establish title to property.
Request an independent checking method using the issuer's known contact details or official service. Avoid following unfamiliar links or scanning a code into a service that requests unnecessary personal information. Where a Greek public document is involved, the lawyer can identify whether verification through gov.gr or the issuing authority is relevant. Keep any validation result linked to the exact document checked.
Practical considerations
- Preserve the complete source file.
- Ask what the mark actually certifies.
- Use independently identified official channels.
