What should I ask about a school meal arrangement?

Establish what is actually provided

Ask whether meals are supplied, brought from home or arranged differently for particular days and activities. Clarify where children eat, how supervision works and whether storage or reheating is available. Do not assume a school meal arrangement also applies to childcare or after-school activities.

Discuss allergies, intolerances, medical diets and religious or family preferences with the appropriate member of staff. Ask how ingredients and changes to menus are communicated and what the school can realistically accommodate. For medical dietary needs, agree the necessary clinical information and an individual plan with the school and your child’s healthcare professional.

Follow the process through

Ask how staff identify the correct meal, handle food sharing and communicate concerns. Where there is a risk of an allergic reaction, confirm emergency arrangements with the responsible staff and clinician rather than relying on a menu description.

Check how absences, excursions and changes to the routine affect meals. Request current written information and review the arrangement after your child starts, particularly if they have difficulty explaining what they ate or whether a problem occurred.
