How should I discuss a child’s participation in a school excursion?
As a practical enquiry checklist, request the school’s current trip information and ask it to explain consent and support arrangements. These are suggested questions, not confirmation of an available service, an individual entitlement, a mandatory document list or a legal or clinical determination.
Read the trip information together
Ask the school for the itinerary, transport arrangements, supervision plan and the process for giving consent. Clarify what pupils need to bring, which activities are planned and how parents will receive important updates. A general description of a destination is not enough to assess an individual child’s participation.
Discuss medication, allergies, mobility, communication and other support needs privately with the designated staff member. Ask how the school proposes to manage these needs away from the classroom and whether clinical input is needed. Do not rely on another parent to pass on essential health information.
Resolve practical uncertainties
Check departure and collection arrangements, emergency contacts and what happens if the plan changes. Ask how costs, cancellations and non-participation are handled without assuming that ordinary classroom arrangements extend to the excursion.
Give your child an age-appropriate explanation and an opportunity to raise concerns. Where a medical or legal issue affects consent or safety, seek advice from the relevant professional and confirm the school’s current procedure before making a decision.
Practical considerations
- Request the itinerary and consent process.
- Discuss support needs with designated staff.
- Confirm emergency and collection contacts.
- Ask about alternatives to participation.
