How should I ask a school about collecting a child?

Request the school’s current procedure

Ask who may collect your child, how authorised adults are recorded and what identification the school expects. Discuss the normal collection point, supervision and any different arrangements for activities or early departures. Do not assume that a relative recognised by your child will automatically be accepted by staff.

Explain any relevant family circumstances privately to the appropriate school contact. If parental responsibility or a court arrangement affects collection, obtain qualified legal advice about the documentation and ask the school how it will record the information. A general FAQ cannot determine who is legally entitled to collect a child.

Plan changes before they happen

Ask how to notify the school when your usual collector is unavailable, who may approve a change and what happens if you are delayed. Check the process for emergencies rather than relying on a casual message to another parent.

Give authorised adults the necessary practical instructions and keep contact details current. Review the plan with your child in an age-appropriate way without making them responsible for deciding whether a collection request is genuine.
