How can I organise everyday pet care when I am out?

As a practical option, consider the following and adapt it to your household: write a familiar care routine and agree a reliable arrangement with someone who knows your pet.

Give the carer a usable routine

Write down feeding, fresh water, exercise, toileting and the places where your pet normally rests. Include handling preferences, escape risks and any animals or situations to avoid. Introduce the carer before you depend on them, and let them practise the normal routine while you are available.

Agree exactly when visits happen and what each visit includes. A vague promise to check in can leave gaps in care. Consider heat, shade and ventilation inside the home, and do not assume an outdoor space remains comfortable throughout the day.

Prepare for a change of plan

Provide your contact details, a trusted backup and the veterinary practice you use. Ask your vet to confirm medication instructions and any condition-specific warning signs; the carer should not alter treatment or improvise doses.

Explain what to do if you are delayed or the pet becomes unwell, including how veterinary decisions will be handled. Share keys securely and avoid publishing your absence dates. Check the arrangement after the first outing and adapt it to the animal’s response.

Practical considerations

  • Introduce the carer before leaving.
  • Write clear veterinary and medication instructions.
  • Agree backup care if you are delayed.
