How can a household maintain reliable local contacts?

As a practical option, consider the following and adapt it to your household: build a contact sheet from current verified details, with clear roles, while keeping private information restricted.

Give each contact a clear purpose

Create a short household directory organised by task: property access, plumbing, electricity, internet, pet care and trusted nearby help. Record the person or business name, contact route, language preferences and how you obtained the details. Ask permission before sharing a private number with visitors or other residents.

Verify entries through direct contact or an established business channel. A recommendation in a community group can be useful, but it is not confirmation that someone still offers the service you need. Ask about their working area, availability and how jobs are agreed before a problem arises.

Make the directory usable

Keep a secure digital copy and an accessible household copy containing only necessary information. Do not include passwords, alarm codes or detailed absence plans in a sheet that guests can see.

Agree who contacts a tradesperson and who can approve work, especially in a shared or rented home. Review the list after a move, a provider change or an unsuccessful call, rather than allowing outdated entries to accumulate.

Practical considerations

  • Verify numbers before depending on them.
  • Keep access codes outside the contact sheet.
  • Record who may authorise household work.
