Buying Property

How can I judge sunlight and shade in the rooms I would use most?

Map room orientation to your routine, then revisit the rooms at relevant times.

East-facing openings generally receive morning sun and west-facing openings afternoon sun; south-facing exposure can receive substantial sun, while north-facing rooms often rely more on indirect light. These are starting points, not guarantees: slopes, nearby buildings, shutters and trees can dominate the result.

Mark your desk, seating and bedrooms on a plan. Record light and glare at the viewing time and revisit when those spaces will actually be used. Lower winter sun and higher summer sun change shading, so compare seasonal sun paths and ask about winter occupation. Look at terrace shade and cooling needs as well as brightness. Do not assume you can remove trees or change openings after purchase.

Practical considerations

  • Record date, time and shutter position.
  • Separate existing light from proposed alterations.
