Teenagers need three things on holiday: their own room, working Wi-Fi and somewhere to swim. Hera 4 has all three — three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a private pool, and a paddle court down the path — plus a village taverna 200 m away and beaches ten to fifteen minutes down the hill. Parents get the quiet; the teenagers get the coast.

THE SPACE

Hera 4 is one of the Hera villas at Kounali Mountain Resort: 130 m² across two floors, three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a private pool on the terrace.

The layout gives everyone somewhere to go. Three separate bedrooms mean siblings do not have to share a wall, and three bathrooms mean the queue before dinner stays short. Downstairs, living room and kitchen are one space, with the door open to the terrace and the pool beyond it.

There is Wi-Fi throughout and a desk if homework or a university application follows you out here. There is also a washing machine, air conditioning in every room, a barbecue, and parking for two cars — which matters when the plan is a different beach every day.

The stairs between floors are worth knowing about, mainly for the suitcase.

WITH TEENAGERS

  • Their own bedroom, and a pool three steps from the terrace
  • Paddle tennis and basketball courts in the resort, free of charge
  • A gym on site, usually empty in the late afternoon
  • Wi-Fi that copes with streaming, and a desk for the laptop
  • Milatos and Sissi beaches 10–15 minutes away, with beach bars at Sissi
  • Malia 20 minutes for shops, ice cream and something closer to a night out
  • Agios Nikolaos 30 minutes for the marina, the lake and a proper dinner

GUEST ACCESS

The villa, the private pool, the barbecue and two parking spaces are yours; nobody else uses them.

Also included: the resort's saltwater infinity pool and sunbeds (May to October), padel tennis, basketball, the gym, the playground and the snack bar.

Check-in from 15:00 with resort staff; check-out by 11:00. Linen and towels are provided.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS

We have children of our own — older now — and we have hosted a lot of families with teenagers. Ask us which beaches have space to park, where the nearest pharmacy is, and which tavernas will still be serving when you arrive late. We answer quickly, and the resort managers are on site during the day.

NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW

Kounali is small, safe and quiet, which is either the best or the worst thing about it depending on your age. There is one taverna, one church and no traffic.

Dinner at the village taverna is 200 m away and has been in the same family since 1921. It is where you end up on the nights nobody wants to drive.

The coast is ten to fifteen minutes downhill: Milatos for a pebbly beach and harbour fish tavernas, Sissi for coves, beach bars and a younger crowd in the evening, Malia twenty minutes for bigger beaches and shops, and Agios Nikolaos half an hour for a marina dinner. Heraklion airport is fifty minutes.

GETTING AROUND

A hire car is essential; the last six kilometres are bends and the coast is a proper drive, not a walk. Two parking spaces behind the gate.
