Villa Athina 5
Slow travel · for guests staying a month, working a few days, and going nowhere in a hurry
Some villas are for a weekend. Athina 5 is for a month. Two en-suite bedrooms, a proper desk, a kitchen worth cooking in, and a walled garden above the bay where the only interruption is the light changing. The village taverna is 200 m away; beaches, bakeries and restaurants are 10–15 minutes down the hill. Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating for whichever season you choose.

THE SPACE
Most guests arrive with a list of the island and spend the first three days doing nothing at all. Athina 5 encourages that. It is 110 m² on the hillside at Kounali Mountain Resort, above the village and below nothing but mountain — arranged for the kind of stay where Tuesday looks much like Monday, and that is the point.
The layout is plain and it works:
Living and dining — one open room, four chairs at the table, a sofa that faces the glass doors rather than the television
Kitchen — full-size fridge-freezer, oven, hob, dishwasher, coffee maker, and enough equipment to cook for a month without eating out every night
Bedroom one — double bed, en-suite shower room, doors to the garden
Bedroom two — double bed, en-suite shower room, its own quiet corner of the house
Terrace — pergola, outdoor table, barbecue, and the bay laid out below
Garden — 300 m², walled and gated, with parking for two cars inside
Practical — air conditioning and heating, Wi-Fi, washing machine, hairdryer, iron, a desk with daylight
There is a rhythm to the place that a weekend never reveals: the bakery run, the swim before lunch, a walk up the lane for bread, the taverna on the evenings you cannot be bothered to cook. After a week you stop checking the time. After two, the woman at the taverna remembers how you take your coffee.
WORKING FROM THE HILL
A few guests bring a laptop and a deadline. The villa handles it better than most: a desk with daylight, Wi-Fi that holds a video call, air conditioning for August and heating for the shoulder months, and a terrace that makes a coffee break feel like a holiday.
Mornings are the stillest hours; by late afternoon the breeze comes up the valley and the pool, the garden or the coast wins over the screen. For a change of scene, the cafés of Sissi and Agios Nikolaos are a short drive away and used to people working over a freddo.
GUEST ACCESS
The villa and its walled garden are yours alone, including the barbecue and two parking spaces behind the gate.
Included with the resort: the saltwater infinity pool and sunbeds (May to October), gym, tennis court, basketball court, children's playground and snack bar.
For longer stays: washing machine, iron and drying space in the garden; linen and towels refreshed weekly, with extra changes and mid-stay cleaning on request.
Check-in from 15:00, self check-in with resort staff; check-out by 11:00. Transfers and car hire can be arranged through the resort at extra cost.
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
We have hosted on this hill for a decade and we are used to guests who stay for weeks rather than nights. Ask us the practical things — where to shop on a Sunday, which taverna is open in November — and we will answer the same day; the resort managers are on site if anything needs fixing.
NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW
Kounali is not a resort village. It is a village with a church, a handful of houses and one taverna, and the nearest traffic light is a twenty minute drive away. People come here to hear the wind instead of the road.
Everyday life is close by. The taverna is 200 m on foot, kept by the same family since 1921, with a menu that follows the season rather than a printer. Milatos, ten minutes down the hill, has a bakery, small shops and a long beach; Malia, twenty, has the supermarkets and pharmacies; Agios Nikolaos, half an hour, has everything else.
The beaches of Milatos and Sissi are ten to fifteen minutes away, with tavernas at the water's edge. In spring the hills are green and the roads empty; in October the sea is still warm and the olive harvest begins; in winter the village is itself and the coast belongs to the people who live there.
GETTING AROUND
A car turns this from a pleasant stay into a good one: the resort sits above the village, the coast is ten to fifteen minutes away, and the bends become familiar by the third day.
Milatos 6 km · Sissi 10 km · Malia 17 km · Agios Nikolaos 23 km · Heraklion airport 49 km, about fifty minutes. Parking for two cars inside the gate. Airport transfers and rental cars can be organised through the resort on request.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Sleeps four in two en-suite double bedrooms; the house sits on one level.
The pool is shared with the other villas and open May to October — winter stays are about the house, the walks and the coast rather than swimming.
Air conditioning and heating are both included, so the villa works in every season.
Longer stays are welcome; ask about monthly rates and mid-stay cleaning before you book.
Please keep noise down after 23:00 — the village is home to people all year.
