THE SPACE

Athina 4 sits in the Athina row at Kounali Mountain Resort, on a plateau above the village where the heat of the coast does not follow you home.

Room by room:

Living and dining — open plan, cool tiled floor, a sofa for four, a dining table that genuinely seats four, doors opening onto the terrace

Kitchen — full-size fridge-freezer, oven, hob, dishwasher, coffee maker, kettle, and enough pots to cook a proper meal

Bedroom one — double bed, en-suite shower room, doors to the garden, mountain side

Bedroom two — double bed, en-suite shower room, sea side

Terrace — shaded pergola, outdoor table and chairs, barbecue, and a long view across the bay

Garden — 300 m², walled and gated, with parking for two cars inside

Practical — air conditioning throughout, Wi-Fi, washing machine, hairdryer, iron, laptop-friendly desk

The house does simple very well. Nothing is fussy, everything works, and after a long day on the trails that is exactly the right combination.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS

We answer messages promptly and the resort has managers on site during the day, so anything that goes wrong is dealt with the same day. Ask us before you arrive for walking routes, taverna recommendations and which beaches suit children — we know the hill and the coast well.

NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW

This is walking country first and beach country second, which is rather the point of being up here.

Milatos cave is 1.8 km away: a vast chamber in the hillside with a hard history and an easy path to it. Around the resort, lanes thread through olive groves to villages where nobody is in a hurry. Further out lie the Lasithi plateau with its windmills, the Cave of Zeus at Diktaio Andro, and the gorges that cut down towards the sea.

For swimming, the beaches at Milatos and Sissi are ten to fifteen minutes by car, with tavernas, harbour tables and beach bars on the sand. Malia, twenty minutes away, has the supermarkets, bakeries and pharmacies. Agios Nikolaos, half an hour, has the marina and the lake. Heraklion airport is fifty minutes.

GETTING AROUND

You will want a car: the resort sits above the village and the coast is a drive, not a stroll. The road from Milatos climbs for about six kilometres and, after the first trip, it is simply the road home.

Free parking for two cars behind the gate. Heraklion airport (HER) 49 km, roughly fifty minutes. Nearest beach: Milatos, 6 km.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

Sleeps four: two double bedrooms, both en-suite.

Air conditioning in every room, though at this altitude you may not need it at night.

The pool is shared with the other villas and open seasonally, May to October; sunbeds and umbrellas included.

Family-friendly throughout: gated garden, playground and courts inside the resort.

Please keep noise down after 23:00.
