Tourism & Attractions

What should I ask a guide about the style of a tour?

Ask how the guide balances explanation, movement, questions and free exploration.

Ask what the tour feels like

A route description tells you where a tour goes, but not how the guide uses the time. Ask whether the style is conversational or lecture-led, how much independent looking is included and whether questions shape the visit. Explain what interests you already have and what you would rather not spend the whole outing doing.

For an archaeological tour, ask how the guide distinguishes physical evidence from interpretation or reconstruction. For a village or food tour, ask how encounters with residents and businesses are arranged. These questions reveal more than a broad promise of an authentic experience.

Check pace and participation

Discuss walking surfaces, standing, shade, breaks and the possibility of leaving part of the route out. If children or travellers with different activity levels are joining, describe their needs rather than simply asking whether the tour suits everyone.

Confirm the language used, group format and whether the named guide will lead the visit. Ask which admissions, transport or tasting arrangements are separate. Choose the guide whose approach matches your curiosity, not only the tour with the longest list of stops.

Practical considerations

  • Ask about explanation, discussion and free exploration.
  • Describe pace and access needs in concrete terms.
  • Clarify what the tour arrangement includes.
