How can I record the reasoning behind an investment decision?
Keep a dated decision note recording your objectives, evidence, assumptions, alternatives and unresolved risks. Ask a qualified financial adviser to document regulated recommendations and their suitability rationale.
Make the decision traceable
Record the decision being considered, who is involved and the date. State the goals and constraints that matter, including household priorities and funds that must remain available for other purposes. Summarise the information relied on and identify its source: a bank statement, professional report, seller statement or your own estimate. Mark information that remains unverified.
Set out the key assumptions and explain why they were considered reasonable at the time. Note alternatives, including delaying or not proceeding, and the practical reasons they were accepted or rejected. Record uncertainties, downside scenarios and what could change the decision. Avoid presenting a forecast as a fact or treating a professional’s limited review as a guarantee.
For regulated advice, ask the qualified financial adviser for written recommendations, scope, fees, conflicts and suitability reasoning. Keep legal, engineering and accounting advice in their own reports and note any limits or follow-up actions. Attach dated versions of projections and correspondence, with sensitive records stored securely. Set a review point or trigger, such as a changed financing offer, new property information or a household change. A clear record supports later review; it does not eliminate investment risk or replace professional advice.
